When is it time to switch to Nightcrawlers for your little?

Updated: Apr 27, 2019

I like to switch my juvenile axolotls to nightcrawler bits as soon as they are big enough to fit them into their mouths. This is usually when they reach about 4 inches. I make the worm pieces only about 1/4 inch long at the most, then let them fall right next to the babies head. This usually will trigger a feeding response. They will grab for the bit and once they have it in their mouths, they will decide if they think it is food or not. :) It's very cute. I usually have to do this a few times, and stagger their meals between the introduced nightcrawlers and their blackworms for a while as they get used to the new concept. Once they are reliably eating the larger worms, I feed mostly these.
